Plants and Animals
Animals
Most animals that live in this biome are mammals such as grizzly bear, deer, moose, lynxes, elk, squirrel, snowshoe hare, wolves, moles. There are some birds such as eagles, snow geese, owls, and falcons. Some insects are also in the biome such as ants and mosquitoes. Animal adaptations in the taiga help them stay warm, hide, and defend them selves. In the winter months most of the animals grow longer hair to stay warm known as their winter coat. The grizzly bear eats a lot of food to gain fat to keep warm. To escape the cold weather, birds migrate to warmer areas in the winter months. |
Plants
Most plants in this biome are spruce, fir, and pine. These plants have to adapt to harsh weather like icy and snowy winters. For example the needles on pine have long waxy needles that protect the trees from freezing and drying out. Spruce's cone shape help them shed ice and sleet more efficiently. Some berry bushes in this biome are blueberry, bilberry, and cowberry bushes. Berries are a good source of food for mammals and birds. |
